The domestic LED industry with twists and turns

2022-09-19

The domestic LED industry started in the 1970s. After nearly 40 years of development, 7 national semiconductor lighting engineering industrialization bases have been formed, including Shanghai, Dalian, Nanchang, Xiamen, Shenzhen, Yangzhou and Shijiazhuang. The products are widely used in the field of landscape lighting and general lighting. At present, my country has become the world's largest producer of lighting appliances and the second largest exporter of lighting appliances. As of the end of 2011, there were more than 3,000 LED companies in my country, of which only 140 had an annual output value of over 100 million yuan. However, among these 140 companies, none of them have annual sales of more than 1 billion yuan, and only a few have more than 500 million yuan.

What is the reason that makes China's LED industry move forward in difficulties? The reason is that the industry lacks authoritative industry technical standards; the second is that the R&D of enterprises is mainly concentrated in the downstream application fields, and the R&D investment in the upstream and midstream is relatively high. few. While large foreign companies and some enterprises in Taiwan have monopolized most of the core LED technology, mainland enterprises can only turn their attention to the downstream application market with lower technology content.

In addition to the weak core technology competitiveness of my country's LED industry, the loose combination of production, education and research is also a major factor restricting its development. A large part of LED patents are concentrated in scientific research institutes. In the field of epitaxy, the top three patent holders are the Semiconductor Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Beijing University of Technology; in the field of chips, the top three are the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Institute of Semiconductors, Beijing University of Technology and Peking University. Compared with scientific research institutions, domestic enterprises have applied for more utility model patents.

Compared with foreign companies, my country's LED patent applications are obviously at a disadvantage. According to the survey of the High-tech LED Industry Research Institute, there are 26,071 LED-related patent applications in China, of which nearly 50% are in the middle and downstream of the industry in terms of packaging and applications. Although my country has certain advantages in electrode, microstructure, reflective layer, substrate peeling, bonding, etc., most of them are peripheral patents, invention patents only account for 60%, and international patents submitted through the "Patent Cooperation Treaty" (PCT) route There are not many patent applications and patents filed abroad.

Facing the "eyes" of international competitors, domestic enterprises should practice their "internal skills" even more. The first is to increase the strength of independent innovation, focusing on research and development of new technologies that can be widely accepted and recognized by the market; the second is to cooperate with foreign companies. On the basis of digesting and absorbing foreign advanced technology, we should strengthen imitation and innovation, and improve the technical effect of competitors' core patents by improving their core patents; again, apply for improved patents, which is an effective way to avoid the risk of patent infringement.

Strengthening industry-university-research cooperation is one of the effective ways to promote the rapid development of my country's LED industry. Some domestic research institutions have certain research and development capabilities, while some enterprises have strong processing and manufacturing capabilities. Enterprises and between enterprises and scientific research institutions should strengthen the awareness of cooperation, promote the transfer of innovation achievements of scientific research institutions to enterprises, and strive to cultivate a group of innovative "leading" enterprises with independent intellectual property rights.
